War For The Planet of the Apes

Michael Giacchino/2017/Sony Classical

Michael Giacchino continues plowing through Hollywood's major franchises, and this is one of his best scores to date. Heavy percussion, simmering strings, and stabbing brass dominate much of the proceedings but Giacchino never apes Jerry Goldsmith, instead paraphrasing. Two themes from previous film DAWN return - the stately ape theme and Caesar's theme that appeared at the finale of DAWN - plus a new swirling theme for the apes, and Giacchino makes the most of them, bringing an incredible film trilogy to a close with a wonderfully emotionally resonant score.
